How to Avoid Leaks While Sleeping on Your Period
Leaks during sleep usually happen because the pad is too short, placed too far forward, or already full before morning. A few simple adjustments can help you sleep better on your period.
1. Choose an overnight pad that is long enough
When you lie down, blood tends to flow toward the back. Overnight pads are longer and wider at the back to catch it.
- Moderate to heavy flow: Ultra Slim Overnight 35 cm
- Very heavy flow: Maxi Protection Ultimate 42 cm
2. Place the pad slightly further back
For sleeping, position the pad slightly further back than you would during the day. Fold the wings neatly around the sides of your underwear so the pad does not shift.
3. Wear underwear that fits
Loose underwear lets the pad shift when you change position. Choose cotton underwear that fits close to the body.
4. Change your pad right before bed
Go to sleep with a fresh, empty pad. Use the toilet before bed, and change your pad as soon as you wake up.
5. Try sleeping on your side
Many people find they leak less when sleeping on their side with knees slightly bent, as the thighs help hold the pad in place. Sleeping on your back or stomach makes it easier for blood to flow toward the back or front.
6. Add extra protection
On your heaviest days, put a dark-colored towel over the sheet. This does not prevent leaks, but it can give you peace of mind.
If you use tampons
Change your tampon every 4 to 6 hours. If you will sleep longer than 6 hours, switch to an overnight pad before bed, such as UMA Ultra Slim Overnight 35 cm or UMA Maxi Protection Ultimate 42 cm.
When to see a doctor
If you still leak almost every night even with the longest pad, or you have to wake up to change your pad every 1 to 2 hours, talk to a doctor. This can be a sign of heavy menstrual bleeding.
